  Krista Cook is a seventh-generation Utah Mormon and a graduate of Brigham Young University who covers LDS topics.

  The Articles of Faith were written by Joseph Smith after a media inquiry concerning LDS beliefs. Now canonized in the Pearl of Great Price, these statements are still the best summary of what Mormons believe.

  Joseph Smith drafted these 13 points for John Wentworth at the Chicago Democrat, a newspaper of the time. This correspondence is called the Wentworth Letter. You can read more about how the Articles were developed and visit the Church's topic page for in depth discussion.

  Ultimately, the Articles of Faith were not published in the Chicago Democrat. However, the Church published them in their own news source, the Times and Seasons, in March, 1842.

  The Articles were canonized as LDS scripture on October 12, 1880. However, keep in mind that they are not a comprehensive statement of LDS beliefs.
